This is a technology based question.

Does anyone here think VHS (as in videotapes) is dead?

Personally, no.

I use VHS tapes to record footage from videogames to use as references for my movies (which in themselves are spoofs on videogames)

Well as a way of filming and recording, no it's not yet dead. As a form of mass media, the service was lovely, I'm sorry you missed it.

Also VHS as a recording tool will eventaully die as digital videos and DVD recorders and/or DVRs take their place.

For recording things, no. But for releasing movies, yes.

VHS is dead if you have Charter Cable!

I say yes. I never use it to record. If I want to record I just record it onto my notebook.

I do have 3 VHS tapes though - 2 that holds the entire series of Space Cases and 1 is a movie called Sunstroke. Neither is on DVD so I still have that show and movie. But even still, I have to say yes.

With such advances in terms of home video cameras such as DVD cameras, and even hard drive cameras, in that regard VHS is definately obsolete. As for buying 'em, sure it's way more difficult, but i believe you still can find what you need with eBay or Amazon so i don't think they're dead in that regard. And as for tv show companies putting their shows on air, i've always seen them use tapes; from what i've seen on movies so far; so i have yet to see them use DVDs to put a show on the air, so i don't think VHS is dead there either. All in all, just because DVD and Blu-Ray are the ones leading the movie watching experience doesn't mean VHS still doesn't have use and it still isn't impossible to acquire a VHS copy of any movie you want.

People still use the VCR and you can still use it to record a tv show episode if your unable to be home to watch it or record a movie.

People buy dvds now more than VHS as people don't really buy the VHS movies anymore.

Well, i no longer use the VCR so i now prefer DVD.. but, i keep VHS in the storage and i don't need to transfer them into DVD because i don't have a VHS-to-DVD Recorder thingy.

I have a bunch of commercial VHS tapes for which I haven't bought DVD replacements yet, but pretty much the only times that I ever touch our VCR anymore is either when I'm watching an old Christmas tape or when I'm backing off a recording from our DVR to a VHS tape for my dad. For the most part, VHS is pretty much dead at our house, but until we convert all of our old VHS tapes to DVD-Rs or buy commercial DVDs to replace those VHS tapes, VHS isn't completely dead here. Personally, I look forward to a future when filmmakers and TV producers won't rely so heavily on physical storage mediums and switch over to more of an emphasis on downloadable content.
