I've worked in a lot of places, a lot of big businesses and franchised supermarkets, just to get by. I don't enjoy retail, but it's easy to get in and out of.
My favourite place to work was this little remaindered book shop that was part of a chain that opened around the country during the end-of-year/Christmas period, every year. It was smaller than any of the other places I'd worked, but the fact that it wasn't some huge chain with suited managers letting us know how disposable we were, plus the emphasis on team work, made it all very rewarding. It was great feeling like we working for ourselves, that it was our store, and our accomplishments. It was a busy job, lots of running around and hoiking stock around for hours on end, but I had a blast and would go back there in a second, if I could.
My least favourite job was last Christmas- I take a lot of temporary jobs- at The Entertainer, a toy stor run on strict(ish) Christian principles, and quite the most joyless place I've ever worked. They were closed on sundays, sure, that was nice, but us lowly, underpaid shop staff worked 50-hour weeks, leaving last out of everyone else at the shopping centre, and getting constant grief from our tiny-minded managers, Mike (who had some obsessive and bizarrely acrimonious rivalry with another branch) and Diane, who was simply a sour-face b*tch who fired me. Yes, I am still bitter.
They also had weird policies, like they'd happily stock Power Rangers (Mystic Force, actually) and Lord of the Rings stuff, but wouldn't carry Harry Potter or anything Halloween-related. We were forever explaining this to customers, who'd walk away baffled.
Anyway, rant over. Anyone else fancy sharing their work history?
